Greetings all.

Looking for an exhaustive, well-written, and most importantly -- *funny* -- guide to the lexicon of British slang expressions.

Any suggestions?

Thankee sai,
Podge D

Pick up a copy of Trainspotting, by the great and fantastic Irvine Welsh. There's a great glossary in the back for all the weird cottish words we American's can't understand. And all the rest of the pages are pretty good too.

I remember as a kid being given a copy of the bible written in Black Country which was extremely funny, but I haven't seen one in years so I don't know whether it's still in print.

If anyone has seen one on the shelves of late let me know.

You could try the Dictionary of Contemporary Slang, edited by Tony Thorne and published in the UK by Bloomsbury.

If you're looking for Scottish slang, pick up a copy of 'The Bogie Man' by Alan Grant in either comic or graphic novel form.

Despite being a good read, every issue comes with a McGlossary, which is essential for figuring out what even the minor characters are saying. (and you thought the Scissormen were hard to understand!)

The thing is there's no such thing as Britslang, this is a very linguistically diverse island, with many non mutually intelligable lexical sets. innit, hai?

There are some great slang dictionaries on the net , where you can spend many an hour laughing in an immature fashion at phrases such as "buttfucking eygpt!" and "to beat (ones meat)".

This is a really useful site - when I can't be bothered to explain my Mancunian slang to all my American friends, I send them here.

Hope that helps!
